The design and management issues of systems based on COMMputation have to be addressed at different levels, from applications, services, and algorithms over system architecture and communication technologies down to the hardware level. At KIT - both at the Forschungszentrum and at the University - a range of ambitious research projects is addressing various aspects of communication and computation in highly interconnected adaptive systems. They may be associated with the following topics which are closely related to research fields of the KIT competence portfolio:
- Grid and Scientific Computing
- Systems engineering
- Service and Web Engineering
- Communication Technology
- Algorithm and Software Engineering
A large number of the projects combines two or more of these topics, emphasizing their strong and active links. The thematic structure of COMMputation and some typical application scenarios are visualized in the figure below. These scenarios will be enabled and empowered by the concepts, methods, and tools of COMMputation, some will be used as benchmarks for a rigorous investigation of the potential benefits of the combined use of communication and computation.
